Ocean Terminal Totem
In 2006 Geckotech Solutions were called in to install the ‘Totem’ structure in Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre Edinburgh. Scaffolding and cherry pickers could not be used so rope access and rigging techniques were implemented to provide the access solution. The Totem was the first of its kind, providing children and adults a like, an adventure within the confines of the shopping centre. Customers would climb, jump and swing their way to the top!
Firstly technicians removed lighting units and awnings from the roof area to create a space in which the support steelwork could be introduced .
Once cleared technicians introduced three large ‘I’ beams to the existing steelwork creating the support structure for the Totem. The complicated nature of the building along with the length of the ‘I’ beams required us to use five chain blocks to manoeuvre each beam into
position! Also during this phase technicians installed steel cables for the ‘belay’ system to support customers if they were to fall off.
The Totem in all her glory! The final piece of the jigsaw required five chain blocks to raise the Totem to her anchor points 18 meters in the air. The Totem was a great success both for Geckotech and the client with many thousand customers donning their harnesses and attempting the impossible climb to the top!
