Oakbank is a 6 span masonry arch viaduct which carries twin non electrified line over the Linhouse Water. Our team were recently involved in the refurbishment of this impressive structure, originally constructed in the 1840s. The 6 arch spans are of similar dimensions; each span is approximately 10m. The overall width of the bridge is approximately 8.7metres.
Our team used rope access techniques and suspended access equipment as the primary means of access throughout.
The main works involved masonry repairs bridge-wide; consisting of stitching and grouting open fractures to rectify vertical cracking, raking out defective mortar and repointing; and dressing back spalled and delaminated masonry and replace with matching masonry.
Concrete delamination is found most frequently in bridge decks and is caused by the corrosion of reinforcing steel or freezing and thawing. Spalling is a form of masonry deterioration in which the outer section of a stone, brick or mortar breaks away in a localised area.
